How come I study philosophy of science?
When I say that I study philosophy of science, people usually wonder about two things: what the philosophy of science is and why I study this. An answer to the former would be so technical and difficult that you must definitely feel bored, so I would like to focus on an answer to the latter.
As a child, I was very obedient. I went to the cathedral two or three times a week. Also, I worked as an altar boy, serving a priest during Mass, in the cathedral. At that time, I shook hands with Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan, the first cardinal in South Korea, in front of many Catholic people.
However, in adolescence, I began to doubt my religion. First, there have been conflicts between science and religion. For example, in case of the origin of the universe and mankind, science explains through the Big Bang Theory, which says the world was created by a tremendous explosion, and Darwin’s theory of evolution. On the other hand, religion explains everything by God while not proving the existence of god because the question of God is in the realm of faith. On hearing the explanation of religion, I was very confused. Second, religion could not solve the problem of evil. In the world, some people are dying not only in hunger but also from wars. I thought if God is full of goodness, these tragedies would not happen. These reasons made me decide to study science.
Getting into the university, I studied organic chemistry. When I was a junior, I realized that science was a series of repeated practices. Students solved exercises and graduate students did their experiment over and over again. In senior year, I wanted to do more creative work such as writing my original ideas, criticizing other thoughts, and doing other interesting activities. That is why I chose to study philosophy of science.
